Scope note
Tools comprising bent or straight blades attached to wood handles or helves. The blades are usually sharpened and smooth, and are used variously as cutting or gathering tools. As a cutting tool, reaping hooks are used to cut grain with a rapid chopping motion. For similar tools used to cut grain with a short sawing motion, use "sickles." Serrated cutting edges generally distinguish sickles from reaping hooks.
